PulmonX Zephyr® Valve, a Treatment Option for COPD and Emphysema
The Zephyr valve is first FDA-approved, minimally-invasive device available in the U.S. for treating patients with severe (stage 3 and 4) emphysema and COPD. Currently available at our Indianapolis hospital location, Franciscan Health is one of the first in the United States to provide endobronchial valves, a new and minimally invasive treatment for severe emphysema, a type of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Treatment for stage 3 and stage 4 emphysema is very limited. Previously, lung reduction surgery was one of the only treatments for advanced COPD that would help to ease the discomfort of the disease. Endobronchial valves are less invasive and produce better results. Patients have reported feeling immediate relief posttreatment.
What is the endobronchial valve placement procedure?
The endobronchial valve procedure is much less invasive than other surgical options for advanced stage COPD and emphysema. The PulmonX Zephyr® Valves are inserted into the patients’ airways during a bronchoscopy. An average of four, very small, valves are placed during the procedure. The valves then block the damaged areas of the lung so that air is no longer trapped, and the healthier parts of the lungs and diaphragm can expand and function better.
What are the benefits of this treatment for stage 3 and stage 4 COPD or emphysema?
- No cutting or incisions need to be made during the procedure
- One-time procedure lasting 30 to 60 minutes
- Many report being able to take full breaths afterwards
- Patients get back to everyday tasks quickly
- Easier breathing with less shortness of breath
- Patients become more active and energetic
- Significantly improved quality of life compared to those untreated
Who can receive this treatment?
The PulmonX Zephyr® Valve is for stage 3 or stage 4 emphysema and COPD patients who have been on medications and oxygen but are still feeling short of breath or are unable to do everyday tasks because of their condition.
PulmonX Zephyr® Valve Procedure Recovery
This procedure requires a short hospital stay after valves are placed. For some patients results are noticed almost immediately and for others it may take up to six weeks to feel the full effects.
