TEMS: Specialized Colon and Rectal Surgery
Franciscan Health currently offers Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery only at Franciscan Health Mooresville. There are only a few surgeons in central Indiana performing the surgery. Our colon and rectal surgeons have redefined the surgical treatment of cancer. We offer a variety of surgical options for early and advanced stage colon and rectal cancer. For some patients, surgery can even be performed without an abdominal incision.
Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM) requires no abdominal incision
TEM is an advanced surgical procedure used to remove polyps and early cancers of the rectum in a minimally invasive fashion through the anus. This technique avoids a major abdominal operation and the need for an ostomy. Because no abdominal incision is needed, recovery time is greatly reduced.
Franciscan Health colorectal surgeons are experts in the use of Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM) providing an innovative option for early-stage rectal cancers. These advanced surgical techniques result in fewer incisions, reduced pain, shorter hospital stays and a quicker recovery.
What makes TEM at Franciscan Health different?
- Single incision laparoscopy is an innovative technique which involves one small incision hidden through the navel.
- Our surgeons are leaders in the use of da Vinci® Robotic Surgery to treat rectal cancers. Nationally, only about 3 percent of rectal cancer surgeries are performed with the da Vinci®.
