When you’re pregnant, it’s not unusual to think about your changing body and baby every minute of every day. And it’s not unusual to worry and have questions. That’s why the Family Medicine Center at Franciscan Health Indianapolis offers a special support and education program called Centering Pregnancy for all its pregnant patients.
The Centering Pregnancy program lets women in the same stage of pregnancy to share experiences and get extra care and education through the pregnancy. This free program is designed to complement the care provided during individual visits with a physician. Patients meet as a group for about 10 sessions prior to their due dates and discuss several topics. Health care professionals talk with expecting moms about managing their own health, including blood pressure, weight and quitting smoking; the benefits of breastfeeding; preparing for the birthing experience; and care for their new infant. More than a means of education, the groups also create supportive bonds between the women.
