About NAPRC Accreditation
Cancer of the rectum is one of the most complex cancers to treat, often resulting in a temporary or permanent colostomy, leaving patients susceptible to local recurrence of the disease. Franciscan Health is Indiana’s first and only institution to have earned the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC) Accreditation; this designation ensures adherence to national guidelines and a commitment to track data for patients and physicians for the best possible outcome.
Franciscan Health's multidisciplinary team (colorectal surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, genetic counselors and a colorectal cancer nurse navigator) offers over 40 years of experience and meets regularly to communicate about every aspect of patients’ personalized treatment plans. Through diligent compliance with standards set forth by the NAPRC, including quality imaging for cancer staging, proper surgical technique and documentation, recommended post-surgical treatment and continued clinical education, Franciscan aims to make measurable improvements to decrease rates of colostomies, permanent stoma reconstruction, and local cancer recurrence.
The American College of Surgeons created the NAPRC to improve the overall quality of life for recovering cancer patients by setting standards that focus on Program Management, Clinical Services and Quality Improvement.
