No One Dies Alone

Franciscan Health’s Palliative Care Department has adopted a national volunteer program, “No One Dies Alone”, to support hospitalized terminally ill patients at the end of life.

For the last few days of a patient’s life, volunteers will be available to be at the bedside of patients who are truly alone. These compassionate companions may hold the hand of the patient, play music, read to the patient, fluff pillows and assist in other comfort care measures as requested by the patient, or just sit quietly.

After a three hour training, the volunteers will be with patients in three-hour shifts, sitting at the bedside until the patient’s death or a family member arrives, providing a gift of respect and dignity for each patient.

The program is accepting volunteers from members of the community. Nursing experience is not necessary. For more information or to register for the class, call Sue Ross, Palliative Care Chaplian at (317) 528-8930.
