There is no doubt that as the temperature drops outside so does our motivation to participate in regular workouts. But man, there is no better way to beat those winter blues than a good old fashioned calorie burn. Here are some tips for keeping yourself motivated and on top of your exercise routine through the winter.
1. Have a Workout Buddy.
Having a friend that you can work out with on a regular basis is a good thing any time of year, but in those cold winter months it is nice to have another person that you are accountable to. You and your workout buddy will encourage each other to work hard and stay motivated. Neither of you will want to let the other down by not showing up, so you will always go.
2. Set Short-Term Goals.
We all have our ultimate goal that we want to reach. But the best way to get there is by taking small steps. Through those cold months set attainable 3-4 week goals and keep track of your progress. You will be more inclined to stick to a regular workout schedule when you know that the next step in reaching that big goal is just around the corner.
3. Try Something New.
You always want to keep some variety in your workout. When the season changes, change your workout routine. When it gets cold outside try something new. Find a new group exercise class to try out, hire a trainer, or find a group training program. It will be fun to see how your body changes with the change in routine and you may find a program that you love.
4. Keep a Journal.
Writing things down always makes us more conscious about our decisions. Keep track of your workouts and your food. You never want to see too many blanks so you won’t skip as many workouts.
5. Don’t Forget About You.
During the holidays we love to give give give...but try to give yourself one thing. You could purchase a small personal training package for yourself that would last all winter, or buy yourself some new workout gear that you will be excited to wear to the gym, new shoes might make your feet a little happier when you run, or a new gym bag may be what you need to pack up all that winter gear.
Try one or two (or all five) of these suggestions this winter and find what best works for you. Fitness doesn’t take a break for the winter and neither should you. Keep it up and you will be amazed at where you are when the warm weather comes back.
