Our Franciscan Physician Network plastic and reconstructive surgeons answer your questions and share their expert insight to help you make informed decisions about getting a tummy tuck.
Q: I have given birth to twins who are now preschool age. I exercise regularly, but still have excess skin and stretch marks around my middle. Would a tummy tuck be a good option for me?
A: A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin, and repairs separated muscles creating a smoother and firmer abdomen and a more toned appearance. You might be a good candidate if you are in good health, not planning to become pregnant again and not planning to lose a lot of weight. The procedure involves the removal of most of the skin and fat between your belly button and pubic hair. The abdominal muscles are also tightened using permanent sutures.
A tummy tuck cannot correct stretch marks, unless they are directly located on the areas of excess skin that will be removed. It's important to remember that a tummy tuck is not an alternative to a good exercise or weight loss program. The results of the procedure can be greatly diminished by large weight fluctuations.
Most people love how they look after this procedure, but it can take several weeks after surgery to feel like yourself again and up to a full year for you to see your final results (due to scar maturation, skin retraction, and complete resolution of postoperative swelling). Additionally, insurance typically will not cover the cost.
Before scheduling surgery, make sure your surgeon was trained specifically in plastic surgery and is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
