OLYMPIA FIELDS, Illinois - Franciscan Heath Olympia Fields and William Payne, MD, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, were jointly awarded the Intellijoint Surgical Innovation Trailblazer Award of Excellence at a reception on July 11 at the Olympia Fields Hospital.
Dr. Payne and Franciscan Health received this award to acknowledge their adoption of intellijoint HIP® - a highly accurate 3D mini-optical navigation system that assists in size selection and positioning of artificial implants during hip replacement surgery.
"By providing intraoperative implant measurements to assist in accurately positioning hip implants, intellijoint HIP® has allowed a reduction in the number of radiographs I would normally take during a direct anterior hip replacement," said Dr. Payne said. "Reduced exposure to fluoroscopy during a procedure is better for everyone in the operating, including the patient, as well as the entire surgical team."
A total hip replacement is a generally successful surgery that can reduce hip pain and restore mobility but, as with many procedures, there are risks. These risks can include leg length discrepancy, dislocation, joint instability, reduced muscle strength, reduced hip range of motion, and long-term pain.
The intellijoint HIP® technology addresses these risks by providing accurate, intraoperative measurements for cup position, leg length, and offset to assist the surgeon in placing implants in a location that best matches the patient's native anatomy."We are honored to receive this award that celebrates our commitment to optimizing patient outcomes and advancing joint replacement technology," said Allan M. Spooner, Franciscan Health Olympia Fields and Chicago Heights President and Chief Executive Officer. "Through the adoption of innovative techniques and technology, like intellijoint HIP®, Franciscan Health is enabling Southland patients of all ages regain mobility find relief from the pain of deteriorating hips."
"Our goal is to provide patients with an advanced level of care by providing every surgeon with effective, easy to use technology," said Armen Bakirtzian, Intellijoint Surgical co-founder and CEO. Franciscan's 'inspiring health' philosophy aligns perfectly with this goal, and I am excited to present the Innovation Trailblazer Award to them. This is an award for both innovating in technology as well as overall cycle of care innovations."
