Franciscan Health Crawfordsville Now Offering Robotic Surgery
CRAWFORDSVILLE, Indiana - Arun Jain, M.D., a board-certified physician in obstetrics and gynecology with Women’s Health Specialists and Dannie Stewart, M.D., a board certified general surgeon with Franciscan Physician Network Surgical Specialists Crawfordsville have joined the team of surgeons operating on the area’s only da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgery system at Franciscan Health Crawfordsville. Dr. Jain is an independent physician who chooses to practice at Franciscan Health Crawfordsville.
“When I first started my practice 20 years ago, I would never have dreamed that we would be able to offer the latest advancement in surgical technology at our local hospital in Crawfordsville,” said Dr. Jain. “I credit the vision of the leaders of Franciscan Health that brought it here. The da Vinci® surgical robot allows me to do advanced gynecologic surgery through smaller incisions with greater finesse and precision. For women needing a hysterectomy or complex laparoscopy procedures this means an easier recovery, shorter hospital stay, smaller scars and less pain. I am very proud of the robotic surgery team we have at our hospital including surgeons, nurses and anesthesiologists who all work together to provide the very best care to the community we love. This truly is big city medicine with small town care.”
Franciscan Health Crawfordsville performed its first da Vinci® surgery in May 2017. There have been more than 25 total surgeries performed using da Vinici robotic surgery system. Local physicians who are also trained on the da Vinci® Surgical System include Jon M. Hoversland, M.D.; Scott L. Sinnott, M.D.; and Katie L. Towles, M.D., all with Franciscan Physician Network Obstetrics and Gynecology.
“It’s wonderful to have such advanced technology available to our patients here in Crawfordsville,” said Dr. Stewart.

The da Vinci® Surgical System enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate minimally invasive procedures for men and women, getting them back to their lives in less time. The daVinci® robot enables our surgeons to operate at a 3D console away from the surgical field. The procedure allows for excellent 3D surgical viewing, improving the ability of the surgeon. Robotic-assisted surgery is an effective and far less invasive alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy. With the assistance of the da Vinci® Surgical System, surgeons can now operate using only 1-2 centimeter incisions and utilize greater precision and control than ever before. Da Vinci can help surgeons minimize the pain and risk associated with surgery while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.
The following surgeries are available using the da Vinci® robotic system:
- Endometriosis surgery
- Gallbladder surgery
- Oophorectomy: removal of ovaries
- Ovarian Cystectomy: removal of ovarian cyst
