LAFAYETTE, Indiana - Franciscan Health Rehabilitation Services in Lafayette has recently installed new technology called the Vector Gait and Safety System. The new system is used to treat pediatric and adult therapy patients.
The Vector Gait and Safety System is a state-of-the-art rehabilitation system for over ground gait and balance training. Vector is designed to give patients confidence and safety for maximized therapy.
"We're proud to now offer this state-of-the-art equipment to patients in our outpatient rehabilitation clinic," says Shannon Heitmiller, director of Rehabilitation Services. "The Vector Gait allows patients to learn to use muscles and movements in a safe environment to help them obtain their therapy goals and enhance their quality of life. We can now offer the same great equipment on our inpatient rehabilitation unit and outpatient therapy clinic to offer the best continuity of care possible."
As an assistive technology with dynamic body weight support, the Vector continuously supports a patient, allows natural movement and ensures they do not fall. The system provides clinical outcome documentation and enables therapists to customize training regimens based on patient goals and ability. It is suitable for adult and pediatric patients recovering from stroke, amputations and orthopedic, brain and spinal cord injuries.
Ken Blad, 79-year-old, from Lafayette has been using the Vector Gait System for therapy treatment the past few weeks. He is using the Vector Gait System to increase balance in his leg and foot strength.
"I choose to be active and was slowed down by two knee replacement surgeries," says Ken. "The Vector has allowed me to improve my movements and walking while being supported. I am tall and normally if I fall during therapy or exercise, I am going down and probably taking my therapists with me. But with the Vector, I am supported and get back up again easily to keep moving."
"Ken is 6'5" and 245 lbs. so pushing the limit with balance tasks can be dangerous for him and the therapist," says Michael Doherty, PT, DPT, physical therapist at Franciscan Health. "That is where the vector comes in and has been a game changer because it allows for us to push him to his current limit of balance and work on dynamic tasks, we may avoid otherwise due to risk of fall and injury. The Vector is a body weight support system that will prevent a fall from occurring if he loses his balance."
Franciscan Health Lafayette East's inpatient rehabilitation also uses a Vector Gait System. Patients in inpatient rehabilitation receive interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of disabling conditions. The goal is usually to return to home after the rehab stay and continue outpatient therapy as needed. When patients transition home, everyday life and activities at home can be challenging which is why patients continue outpatient therapy. Patients that have used the Vector Gait for treatment in inpatient rehabilitation will now have the opportunity to continue using for therapy during outpatient treatment.
Franciscan Health Lafayette offers outpatient physical, occupational, speech, pediatric and massage therapy at the Lafayette Family YMCA, located at 3001 South Creasy Lane, Lafayette.
