Franciscan Health Surgical Resident Named American Osteopathic Foundation Resident of the Year in Surgery
SOUTH SUBURBAN CHICAGO, Illinois - Franciscan Health Olympia Fields and Chicago Heights surgical resident, Christopher Mussman, DO, has been awarded the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) Outstanding Resident of the Year in Surgery Award. The award is a national competition and distinction that recognizes and honors osteopathic residents whose combination of clinical promise, leadership, dedication and commitment to osteopathic patient-centered care, separate them from others.
Franciscan Health surgery residency program director, Daniel Vera, MD, nominated Dr. Mussman for the AOF Resident of the Year in Surgery Award, which was presented on October 6, at the National Honors Awards Ceremony in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. "Dr. Mussman leads by example with this strong work ethic," said Dr. Vera. "Whether it is patient care, academia or somewhere in the middle, he always gives 110 percent." "It is the unique combination of intelligence, skill and commitment that elevated Dr. Mussman above other surgical residents," added Matthew Martens, DO, a surgeon with Specialty Physicians of Illinois. "In addition, his empathetic demeanor will provide comfort to his patients when they are most in need."
Dr. Mussman graduated from Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2012 and completed his general surgery residency at Franciscan Health in 2017.
