LAFAYETTE, Indiana - Franciscan Health Cancer Center Lafayette now offers local clinical trials and research.
This new service in Lafayette will create opportunities for innovative treatments, such as immunotherapy and genetically targeted therapy and will also conduct research to better understand cancer causes and prevention. Individuals who volunteer for clinical trials will be managed by a physician who has more than five years of experience in leading such studies. In addition to clinical trials of novel drugs, biologics and devices, Franciscan Health Cancer Center Lafayette will participate in health outcomes research to assess the end results of healthcare services, providing evidence for the value of specific medical treatments or interventions that can be used to make better decisions and improve healthcare.
Clinical trials are research studies that involve people. By conducting a carefully controlled test of a medicine, vaccine, medical device or medical procedure, they provide access to advancement in treatment options where there is currently no existing drug or regimen available. Clinical trials may also involve researching new uses for an already approved treatment.
"Bringing clinical trials to Franciscan Health Lafayette offers our patients cutting edge therapies that help us to provide the best of care close to home," says Taylor Ortiz, MD, Franciscan Physician Network oncologist and Medical Director of Oncology Clinical Trials. "Franciscan's clinical trials use immunotherapy and personalized, targeted treatments which are the present and future of cancer treatment. We are excited to be able to offer this to Tippecanoe County and surrounding communities."
Every treatment must go through the clinical research study process; it is the only way a new treatment can become approved for use.
Franciscan Health has a Human Research Subject Protection Program, which includes:
- A board of active and involved clinicians who provide local oversight;
- Training for investigators, research staff and clinical staff assisting in the conduct of research; and
- An internal compliance auditing program
