Simple Screenings Are Vital Tools In Detecting Cancer, Heart Disease (Video)
Lana Baker was sorting through the daily delivery of letters, bills and flyers and was about to toss what she at first thought was ordinary junk mail. She inspected it closer and decided it was something worth considering.
"The card advertised $49 lung and heart scans at Franciscan Health and I thought to myself that's not a high cost and something I should do," Baker said, who, at the time, had been a smoker for nearly 40 years. "So, I decided to get the screenings and it came back clear."
In 2017, she sought new screenings (lung, heart and vascular) and the hospital called her with the results and the next day: The lung scan revealed a suspicious growth in the upper lobe of her right lung and a subsequent biopsy confirmed the presence of Stage 1 cancer.
"I had no symptoms at all, nothing whatsoever, and I felt fine," said Baker, a resident of Franklin, Indiana. "The Franciscan cancer team was amazing, and we hit the road running to tackle the cancer."
Led by medical oncologist Nadeem, Ikhlaque, MD, and cardiovascular surgeon Andrew Barksdale, MD, the team of experts collaborated closely to map out a treatment plan. Such a multidisciplinary approach is the standard protocol in caring for all patients at Franciscan Health Cancer Center in Indianapolis.
The decision was made to remove the cancerous mass from the upper lobe. Fortunately, the disease had not spread and no follow-up chemotherapy would be required. The prognosis was promising and the 65-year-old patient was motivated to give up smoking.
Two months after surgery, Baker was back to her routine activities. She and her husband traveled to Florida for vacation; she took up golf and tennis. And she and her husband are the proud grandparents of three.
“Any time you experience something as dramatic as a cancer diagnosis, you gain a whole new appreciation of life and realize not to take anything for granted,” Baker said. “Looking back, that $49 scan saved my life.”
