St. Elizabeth Hospice Offering Volunteer Training Class
LAFAYETTE and CRAWFORDSVILLE, Indiana - St. Elizabeth Hospice is in the process of scheduling volunteer training classes for new volunteers to work with hospice patients and their families in your area.
Volunteers provide non-medical services to hospice patients and their families that may include a break for caregivers, patient companionship, listening and emotional support, basic bedside comfort measures or assisting with shopping, yard or household chores. Volunteers can be a meaningful support for families during this difficult time. Volunteers are needed for the following counties: Benton, Carroll, Clinton, Fountain, Jasper, Montgomery, Newton, Tippecanoe, Warren and White.
The training program includes hospice philosophy, care of the dying, safety precautions, infection control, listening techniques, communication and family dynamics, spiritual care and assisting people through grieving. In addition, volunteers are scheduled to attend one of the Franciscan Health staff orientation sessions and participate in a field experience with a member of the hospice team.
Those who have lost loved ones within the last year are strongly encouraged to wait for at least one year before volunteering for direct care with our hospice families; however we encourage you to consider providing office support.
Please contact Elizabeth Berger, St. Elizabeth Hospice volunteer coordinator, at (765) 423-6924 to schedule an interview for the training class, or to inquire about hospice volunteer opportunities.
