Walk With a Doc Program Steps Off Again at Franciscan Health Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – It's a way of getting up, getting out and getting healthier. And in doing so, you can take a stroll alongside a Franciscan Health physician or medical staff member and learn about wellness and other health-focused issues.
To that end, the Indianapolis-based hospital is for the second time hosting its season-long Walk With a Doc program, beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at Franciscan Health Indianapolis (8111 South Emerson Avenue). The series continues each Thursday at the same time through November 16.
"Our goal is to give patients and their families an opportunity to walk with a team of medical professionals," said Christopher Doehring, MD, vice president of medical affairs. "There's no question that increasing exercise – even moderately – reduces the risks of many diseases such as coronary heart disease, breast and colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes."
The events take place along the Franciscan Fitness Trail, meeting at mile marker 1, on the south side of the campus, directly opposite the Center for Women & Children.
Sessions are led by physicians who speak for 3-5 minutes and then walk with the participants for 45-55 minutes. Walkers are encouraged to continue after the initial hour. A snack and water will be provided. All activities will occur, regardless of the weather, with the use of an alternate track inside the hospital.
Franciscan Health Indianapolis is the only healthcare system in the area to offer Walk With a Doc. Franciscan Plainfield Health Center also will host similar events April 17 to May 22, from 6 to 7 p.m. Contact Sabrina.Johnson@franciscanalliance.org.
Plans also call for Franciscan Health to partner with Indy Parks & Recreation for special walking events at Garfield and Washington parks.
The walks are free, but registration is encouraged. Click HERE to register.
The nationally acclaimed Walk With a Doc program was created by David Sabgir, MD, a board-certified cardiologist who practices with Mount Carmel Clinical Cardiovascular Specialists in Columbus, Ohio.
