Research at Franciscan Health

Clinical trials are research studies that involve people. Franciscan Health in Indianapolis is a leader in these studies that test new ways to prevent, detect, diagnose or treat diseases. People who take part in clinical trials have an opportunity to contribute to scientists’ knowledge about and to help in the development of improved treatments. Find a clinical trial through Franciscan.

What is a clinical trial?

A clinical trial, also called a research study, is a carefully controlled test of a medicine, vaccine, medical device (such as hip or knee replacement, mechanical heart valve, etc.) that has not yet been approved for use for the general public, or medical procedure to see if it works safely in a group of volunteers. A clinical research study may also involve researching new uses for an already approved treatment. Clinical research studies take time to complete; every treatment must go through the clinical research study process. It is the only way a new treatment can become approved for use

Am I right for a study?

It is important that research studies include all kinds of people. Every clinical research study is different because every investigational treatment is different. Research studies have a checklist to help find the types of volunteers they need. Some need people who are a certain age, others may need only women, or only men, and some need volunteers with a certain illness. The research team or your doctor can match your medical history with a study checklist to see if there is a clinical research study right for you.

What are my rights as a participant?

You have the right to:

  • Choose whether to enroll in a clinical trial or to not take part in a clinical trial
  • Drop out at any time
  • Be given new information about the clinical trial
  • Ask questions at any time and have them answered as soon as possible

What should I expect?

If there is a study that is right for you, the clinical research team will tell you key facts and update you about the clinical research study including:

  • Study visits, tests, and procedures
  • The risks and benefits
  • Your privacy and your rights
  • Compensation, if any is provided

What will be expected of me?

As a clinical research study volunteer, you will be asked to:

  • Go to study visits at the health clinic, medical center or doctor’s office
  • Take your study medication as scheduled
  • Fill out study-related forms
  • Talk with your research team about how you’re feeling
  • Stay informed and ask questions about anything that you do not understand or would like to know

Benefits of our clinical trial program

  • Access to advanced treatment options and promising investigational interventions that are generally not available outside a Clinical Trial.
  • Board-certified physicians and as well as a staff of experienced registered nurses, study coordinators, phlebotomists, and other support personnel.
  • An intervention that may be more effective than standard therapy- and if it is more effective- trial participants may be the first to benefit
  • An opportunity to help other people who need future treatment
