INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – When customers dined at Bubba's 33 restaurant this fall, they were also feeding a program designed to help families undergoing the rigors of cancer care.

In October, patrons of the city's southside eatery were encouraged to purchase pink bracelets at $1 each imprinted with "Stomp Out Breast Cancer." In turn, the proceeds would be shared with Franciscan Health Cancer Center Indianapolis, which is known for its cancer services and outreach programs.

The partnership has paid off. At the end of October, bracelet sales totaled $3,720, which were converted into restaurant gift cards, bearing the distinctive Franciscan Health and Bubba 33's logos. The cards will be distributed among patients and their families served at the Cancer Center over the next year.

"Our goal was to exceed what was raised in 2018, and thanks to the generosity of our customers and the efforts of our employees, we more than doubled the amount of donations," said Bubba's 33 Manager Sarah Clark-Carson, who along with her colleague, Makaela Rader, recently presented the cards to the hospital. As a further incentive to boost donations, the restaurant offered beer mugs with bracelets at a higher cost.

The Cancer Center determines the denomination of each card and distributes them accordingly to families.

For the Bubba's representatives, the project was more than just a mere fundraiser. In recent months, Clark-Carson's godmother and Rader’s grandmother both passed away after battling cancer.

"Most already have so much to deal with during cancer treatment and the meal gift cards mean so much to our patients and their families," said Joan Himebrook, community outreach coordinator for the Cancer Center.
