Cancer Survivors Celebrate New Beginnings

MICHIGAN CITY, Indiana - A butterfly release, signifying new beginnings, was a highlight of a National Cancer Survivors Day program June 2 at Franciscan Health Woodland Cancer Care Center Michigan City, which is under the auspices of Franciscan Health Michigan City.
Before taking flight, a butterfly perches on the finger of Sara Hockney, of South Bend, who was among the approximately 100 attendees. Hockney is affiliated with the University of Notre Dame’s cancer survivors program.
The event, which had a Hawaiian luau theme, likewise featured testimony from breast cancer survivor Susann Pangerl, of nearby Grand Beach, Michigan, who recalled how she learned she had been stricken with the disease, and who lauded the services she received from the Woodland staff.
Staff members and other speakers also provided information on cognitive issues and treatment, cancer-related fatigue and psychosocial and emotional issues. Musical entertainment and refreshments also were provided.
