Franciscan Health Breast Center Program Earns National Re-Accreditation

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – The Franciscan Health Breast Center at Indianapolis and Mooresville has been granted full re-accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.

The three-year designation is given only to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and which undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.

During the survey, Franciscan Health Breast Center demonstrated compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating patients who are diagnosed with all forms of breast disease, including cancer. Such standards include center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement.

Multidisciplinary Care Management Breast cancer is a complex disease and requires a multidisciplinary team effort to manage the care of every patient. Such an approach ensures each patient receives personalized, coordinated and compassionate care from experts in a variety of specialties.

Franciscan Health Breast Clinic Led by Erika Rager, MD, MPH and Juliana Meyer, MD, the clinic brings together a team of breast cancer experts in surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, radiology, genetic counseling and other specialties. Patients can meet with the entire team in one visit at a convenient location saving them several weeks of waiting and traveling to multiple appointments.

Breast Nurse Navigator Patients are supported by a dedicated breast nurse navigator who adds a personal touch to the process, helping guide patients on a one-on-one basis along the path from diagnosis through treatment..

Targeted Radiation Therapy The Franciscan Health radiation oncology team is one of the most experienced in the state and uses the most advanced technology available to treat patients.

Surgery There are several surgeons who perform breast cancer surgery, but many do not specialize solely in that area. Franciscan Health breast surgeons perform a large volume of breast cancer surgeries each year. They also work close with reconstructive and plastic surgeons who ensure treatment plans provide the best cosmetic options and results.

Research and Clinical Trials As one of the largest research programs in Indiana; Franciscan Health participates in research studies and clinical trials for cancer medications, treatments and procedures so that patients have access to the newest drugs and therapies.

Hereditary Cancer Program (genetic counseling) Genetic counseling typically is recommended for people who have a personal and/or family history suggestive of a hereditary cancer conditions. The center has a genetic counselor available to help patients understand complex genetic information and assess their cancer risk.

Advanced Imaging (3-D mammography and same-day appointments) Franciscan Health takes mammography and early breast cancer detection to the next level with 3-D mammography. This advanced digital tool improves the ability to detect smaller breast cancers that would be hidden on traditional mammography. An added benefit is that patients also may schedule same-day appointments.

Moving Beyond Cancer Survivorship Program The program blends a unique and holistic approach, combining physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health components for survivors, loved ones and caregivers. Moving Beyond is a free 12-week program and offers classes throughout the year.
