RENSSELAER, Indiana - On February 6, 2019, a new Advanced Wound Healing Center opened at Franciscan Health Rensselaer.

"Most wounds heal on their own, in two to three weeks, but if they don't – you may need the help of a wound care specialist," said Shari Overdorf, Franciscan Health nursing director for advanced wound healing.

The center has a team of medical experts from the throughout the hospital, along with primary care providers who can be pulled in as needed to help with non-healing wounds. Team members are assigned based on patient need. This could include physicians, nurses, therapists, pharmacists, dietitians and/or surgery staff.

The center focuses on helping those with a variety of wounds like ulcers, burns and skin disorders. The center's team works on treatment plans and assist patients in identifying factors that could be contributing to non-healing wounds.  The Advanced Wound Healing Center offers serial wound debridement, application of skin substitutes, compression therapy and more.

Along with treating wounds, the Franciscan Health Advanced Wound Healing Center provides services to make sure patients, their families and caregivers are set up to succeed in the healing process. This includes education, help with ordering special equipment, dietary screenings and potential referrals to dietitians, access to hospital support services and coordination of wound treatment with other medical care.

The Advanced Wound Healing Center is located at Franciscan Health Rensselaer's east entrance in front of the Emergency Department entrance. The Center accepts patients by physician or self-referral. The center is open one day a week on Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call (219) 866-9845.
