Overview
Our colorectal fellowship in Indiana is the first and only colon and rectal surgical training program in the state. In 2008, Franciscan Health partnered with the Indiana University School of Medicine and Indiana Colon & Rectal Specialists (formerly Kendrick Colon & Rectal Center) to offer an ACGME accredited colon and rectal residency training program. In 2013, the ACGME approved its request to expand the residency to 2 residents. Dr. Dipen Maun has been the Program Director since 2013.
The training program prides itself on providing a wide clinical experience in a highly efficient training platform. As evident by the annual case numbers by the graduating fellows, there are essentially no deficiencies when it comes to clinical experience. We are heavily focused on minimally invasive surgery and employ techniques such as laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, single incision laparoscopic surgery, Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery, Robotic TAMIS surgery, both intracorporeal and extracorporeal anastomosis and transanal extraction during sigmoid resection. We are one of the highest volume sites for rectal cancer surgery and are the first and only accredited institution for rectal cancer care in the state.
The majority of endoscopy and anorectal surgeries are performed at high volume efficient ambulatory surgery centers. Most graduates finish with over 400 endoscopic procedures and over 100 anorectal procedures. Most faculty tend to perform their own anorectal physiology and treat complex pelvic floor disorders and fecal incontinence. The teaching staff includes 11 physicians comprised of doctors from Franciscan Health and IU Department of Surgery.
Applicants must be board-eligible or board-certified in General Surgery from the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The one-year residency begins on Aug. 1 and ends on July 31. The colon and rectal fellowship program is approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and it marks the first educational joint venture between Franciscan Health and IU, which has the nation’s second-largest academic medical institution. Upon completion of their training, residents will be eligible for the qualifying and certifying exams administered by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Our colorectal surgery residency, through a partnership with the Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine and Indiana Colon & Rectal Specialists, offers an ACGME accredited training program i.e., applicants will become board eligible after successful completion of the residency. Our curriculum includes rotations that will primarily take place at Franciscan Health hospital locations (Mooresville and Indianapolis) with a small portion performed at Indiana University hospitals.
The year focuses on all aspects of colon and rectal surgery and will include proficiencies in lower endoscopy and polypectomy, anorectal surgery and both minimally invasive and open techniques for abdominal colon and rectal diseases. We have a strong commitment to minimally invasive surgery both abdominally and transrectally and over 80% of our cases are approached and completed in this manner. Techniques such as TEM, TAMIS, daVinci robotics, pure laparoscopy, and single incision laparoscopy are utilized with regularity. Care is taken to make sure there is a balanced exposure between inpatient surgery, outpatient surgery, endoscopy and outpatient clinic experience. A didactic schedule which is continually evolving utilizes the topics based on the table of contents of the American Society Colon and Rectal Surgery Textbook.

Given this exposure, our oral and written board pass rate is nearly perfect since the training programs inception.

Application Process
Please apply through the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).Our program participates in National Residency Match Program (NRMP) and Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
