Overview
The program provides students with theoretical and practical training to work in a clinical lab. Medical technology is a crucial part of the healthcare patients receive every day. Lab tests provide doctors with information to make complicated treatment decisions.
The program combines the heart of a Catholic health system with the science of today's complex laboratory needs. Our students work alongside our faculty to perform routine tests and prepare for complex medical procedures. The program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
The program accepts students in the final year of a baccalaureate degree program at an affiliated college or university, or those with a bachelor's degree. Students earn 32 college credit hours and receive eight hours of instruction a day. Credit can be transferred to an affiliated college or university to fulfill requirements for a bachelor of science degree.
Curriculum
Written and practical exams and evaluations are given throughout the curriculum. Progression in the program is determined by meeting program objectives and standards, and consistent interaction with the faculty ensures the student is informed of their progress.
Students participate in integrated lectures and laboratory exercises carried out in the student laboratory. Lectures are followed by related laboratory procedures. Scheduled rotations stress laboratory skills and instrument procedure and troubleshooting techniques.
To advance the team approach to healthcare, students interact with a variety of healthcare professionals in different settings. Students also receive opportunities to observe and have hands-on experiences with technologies and methodologies currently not performed at Franciscan Health.
Requirements
Admission is based on a combination of requirements, including academic and essential functional qualifications, as well as a professional attitude. Transcripts are evaluated not only for required GPAs but also for the quality of coursework and number of retakes. We evaluate:
- Academic performance: Cumulative and science grade point averages must be at least 2.7 on a 4.0 scale. We calculate the science GPA using all classes in human biology, chemistry and math, including retakes.
- Professional qualities: Maturity, motivation, adaptability and time management
- Interpersonal skills: Letters of personal reference and interview
- Other criteria: Extracurricular activities, responsibilities and interest in the Clinical Laboratory Science Program
Degree requirements
Students in a 3-plus-1 program at institutions affiliated with the Franciscan Health Clinical Laboratory Science Program must be eligible for a bachelor's degree from that college or university after satisfactorily completing their clinical year.
Students with bachelor's degrees or 4+1 receive preference from affiliated schools (see bellow).
Pre-placement screening
We require proof of personal health insurance. You must also complete a free screening that includes:
- Background check
- Drug screening
- Immune status testing
- TB test
Course requirements
Prerequisites with a minimum C- grade in each class include:
- Chemistry: 16 semester hours of credit, including organic and/or biological chemistry
- Biological science: 16 semester hours of credit, including microbiology, with a lab and immunology
- Mathematics: At least one course in college-level math
Students who meet minimum prerequisites seven or more years prior to application must update their academic preparation. Please contact the program director to discuss available options.
Outcomes
Our program outcomes for the reporting period June 2019 through June 2021 include:
- 100% graduation rate for students entering the final half of the clinical program
- 100% first-time pass rate on the external ASCP BOC exam
- 100% employment rate prior to graduation for those who sought positions
- 0% attrition prior to entering the final portion of the program
Our final comprehensive exam prepares our students to score well on the exam and perform well in the laboratory. Further information about outcomes and benchmarks can be found on the NAACLS website.

Application Process
Download and complete the Application Form (see above). The deadline for submitting application materials is December 1. This includes all parts of the application packet and a transcript of grades from all colleges or universities attended. Interviews will be scheduled after application materials have been received, from the first week of October through the second week of December.The Clinical Laboratory Science Program at Franciscan Health Indianapolis is in the Consortium of Indiana Medical Laboratory Educators (CIMLE) match, and a CIMLE match form must be completed to become eligible for placement. This form is available from any CIMLE program director, and will be explained further during the interview.
