LAFAYETTE, Indiana - Franciscan Health Cancer Center Lafayette recently received a donation of giftbags for patients from students in the Junior Honor Society at Southwestern Middle School in Lafayette.
The students raised over $300 to purchase the items to bring comfort to patients receiving chemotherapy. The fundraiser included many from the school and brought awareness to cancer.
The students utilized a fundraiser entitled: “Tat a Teacher” where students could purchase and apply a temporary tattoo to the teachers.
“We are very grateful to the students in the Junior Honor Society at Southwestern Middle School for their wonderful donation to our cancer patients,” said Shannon Heitmiller, director for oncology service line for Franciscan Health Western Indiana Division. “Receiving the giftbags and the various items in them meant a lot to our patients as well as the wonderful handwritten cards that the students took the time to make.”
With the money raised, students purchased various items including pillows, eye covers, ear plugs and crossword puzzle books to put in the giftbags. Students also drew on the outside of each bag and created individual cards with messages for each giftbag.
