Overview

The primary focus of the advanced emergency medical technician (AEMT) is to provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. AEMTs function as part of a comprehensive emergency medical services (EMS) response under medical oversight, performing interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. The AEMT is a link from the scene to the emergency healthcare system. 

AEMTs work in a variety of occupational fields, for example:

  • Public safety
  • Industrial
  • Hospitals/clinics
  • National and state parks
  • Travel industry 
 

Requirements

  • Emergency Medical Technician certification
  • Government-issued identification
  • Negative drug test
  • Approved background check
  • Vaccinations and negative tuberculosis test
  • Public Safety Identification Number (PSID #)
