Overview
This comprehensive, instructor-led course is critical for enhancing and validating nurses' and physicians' ability to interpret and respond to fetal heart monitoring tracings. It can also be used as a competency assessment to validate the knowledge and skills of perinatal clinicians who use fetal monitoring.
The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation has accredited AWHONN as a provider of continuing nursing education. AWHONN also holds a California BRN number California CNE provider # CEP580. Accredited status does not imply AWHONN or ANCC endorsement of any commercial products displayed or discussed in conjunction with an activity.
Professional Education Services Group manages the continuing nursing and medical education credit. It is available via the AWHONN online CNE/CME system.

Curriculum
You will learn and be assessed in skills that include:
- Maternal and fetal physiology
- Interpretation of fetal and uterine monitor tracings
- Evaluation of auscultated fetal heart sounds
- Leopold’s maneuvers
- Placement of fetal spiral electrodes and intrauterine pressure catheters
- Enhanced communication evaluation and strategies
We highly recommend "Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles & Practices" as a reference for course preparation.
Requirements
The applicant must be a registered nurse, advanced practice nurse or physician who has completed a basic or foundations fetal monitoring course. The applicant should also have at least six months of experience using fetal heart monitoring technology in the perinatal setting.
