Overview

The Franciscan Health Echocardiography Program Crown Point offers a balanced didactic and clinical educational experience to prepare our students for a career in medical sonography. This 22-month hospital-based program prepares students for a career in echocardiography. The program includes:

  • Classroom instruction
  • Lab skills
  • Clinical experiences in a various healthcare settings

Most classes are Monday and Wednesday from 5 - 7 p.m. Students will complete clinical hours during the day.

The Echocardiography Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.


Didactics

Instructors are hospital staff members. They offer clinical, scientific and technical expertise in the following subjects:

  • Ultrasound physics
  • Echocardiography
  • Cardiac anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology

Curriculum

Students will build their expertise as they progress through the challenging, high-quality curriculum. Clinical experiences add to the student learning experience.

Faculty members are teachers with clinical practice and experience. Students have direct access to faculty throughout their education and training.


Rotations

Students take part in clinical rotations with the supervision of our experienced clinical coordinator.

Lab skill training and clinical rotations begin at Franciscan Health Crown Point. Rotations then move to various Franciscan Health facilities in northwest Indiana. Students get the chance to learn from some of the area's best echocardiography technologists.


Requirements

Prerequisites

Prerequisite classes must be college level, credit earning courses passed with a minimum grade of a C (GPA 2.0).

  • English, Speech or Composition (We also accept CLEP scores above 49 for English Composition with essay.)
  • Algebra, Statistics, or mathematics (We also accept CLEP scores above 49 for College Algebra.)
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 (or 1 semester of Anatomy and 1 semester of Physiology)
  • General college physics or Radiographic Physics

Corequisites

Corequisite classes must be college level and may be completed before or during the course of the program. They must be passed with a minimum grade of C (GPA 2.0).

  • Medical Terminology

Additional transfer courses required to obtain an Associate of Applied Science degree upon program completion:

  • Additional transfer credits may be earned prior to or while enrolled in the program.
  • General electives
    • Students must earn a total of 24 transfer credits before the end of the program to be issued an Associate of Applied Science degree. These transfer credits include the prerequisites and the corequisite (if official college credit was given).

To apply, you must complete the application and provide the following:

  • Goal statement essay (requirements included on the online application)
  • Official sealed transcripts from high school and all colleges and universities. Must include completed prerequisites. See Requirements for list of required classes.
  • Two letters of recommendation
