Overview
Our emergency nursing residency program helps new nurses transition into practice by promoting confidence and success. It also allows for growth and focuses on retention.
After a 2-week orientation, the nurse residency is conducted in two phases:
- Phase I: 12-16 weeks. Consists of a didactic component, online learning modules and clinical hours with a preceptor.
- Phase II: 6-12 months. Includes advanced classes and mock codes.
Nurse residency goals
- Promote safe clinical practice
- Provide a strong competency-based orientation
- Support the advanced beginner nurse in strengthening essential nursing skills
- Develop clinical leadership skills at the point of care
- Link research-based evidence to practice outcomes and incorporate these principles into patient care
- Decrease nurse turnover rates
- Promote a lifelong commitment to professional nursing
- Demonstrate effective clinical decision-making skills related to clinical judgment and performance

Curriculum
Phase I includes a 7-week long didactic component with the following classes:
- Week 1: Welcome/Introduction/Tour/Gastrointestinal Emergencies/EMS Working as a Team
- Week 2: Obstetrical Emergencies/ Emergency Deliveries/Orthopedic, Ocular and Maxillofacial Emergencies
- Week 3: Trauma Documentation/Pharmacology Part I/Triage
- Week 4: Neurological Emergencies/Shock/Trauma/Pediatrics
- Week 5: Cardiac Emergencies/Endocrine Emergencies/Environmental Emergencies
- Week 6: Sexual Assault/Genitourinary/Cultural Diversity/Domestic Violence
- Week 7: Pharmacology Part II/Wrap-up and Testing
Phase II includes three additional classes:
- ED Triage
- ED Equipment Day
- ED Trauma
New graduates are assigned 384 clinical hours with an emergency nurse preceptor. An additional 48 hours are assigned after the completion of phase II classes.
Online modules
Participants are assigned an online Knowledge Inventory Tool (KIT) with automatic assignment of necessary Emergency Nursing Orientation (ENO) modules.
Franciscan Health Simulation Center
The Franciscan Health Simulation Center adds an innovative teaching methodology to help integrate new knowledge into emergency nursing practice. Nursing residents will participate in simulation experiences using a high-fidelity manikin.
The Simulation Center consists of:
- Four simulation rooms
- Two debriefing rooms
- Control room
- Medication room with a working Pyxis
Rooms feature up-to-date patient care environments that simulate:
- Surgical suite
- Critical care/medical-surgical room
- NICU
- Labor and delivery
- Emergency department patient rooms
Requirements
Nurses who meet the following criteria are eligible for a nurse residency at Franciscan Health:
- First nursing role (or less than one year of experience) or have never worked in acute healthcare
- Graduated from an accredited nursing program with an ASN, BSN or MSN
Application Process
When you are hired as a new graduate nurse, you are automatically enrolled into your service line residency and its associated Franciscan Health Nurse Residency Program.
