Curriculum

Labor and delivery/antepartum/OB triage

• Completion of the didactic online Perinatal Orientation Education Program (POEP)
• Multiple simulation opportunities within our simulation center and the hospital
• Review of hospital policies and how they relate to the labor, triage and antepartum patient population
• 3- to 6-month orientation with a preceptor

Postpartum/newborn nursery

• Completion of the didactic online POEP
• Multiple simulation opportunities within our simulation center and the hospital
• Review of hospital policies and how they relate to the postpartum and newborn patient population
• 6- to 8-week orientation with a preceptor

Neonatal intensive care

• Completion of the Neonatal Orientation Education Program (NOEP), covering basic newborn care in a neonatal intensive care environment
• Multiple simulation opportunities within our simulation center and the hospital
• 3- to 6-month orientation with a preceptor

Pediatric care

• Complete Elsevier orientation modules related to the pediatric population
• Perform simulations related to pediatric skills and policy requirements
• 6- to 8-week orientation with a preceptor

Franciscan Health Simulation Center

The Franciscan Health Simulation Center adds an innovative teaching methodology to help integrate new knowledge into the various areas of women’s and children’s nursing (L&D, NICU, newborn and pediatric care, antepartum and postpartum care). Nursing residents will participate in simulation experiences using high-fidelity manikins.

The Simulation Center consists of:

• Four simulation rooms
• Two debriefing rooms
• Control room
• Medication room with a working Pyxis

Our simulation rooms feature up-to-date patient care environments that simulate:

• Surgical suite
• Critical care/medical-surgical room
• NICU
• Labor and delivery
• Emergency department patient rooms
