Overview
The Paramedic is the pinnacle of the pre-hospital care team. They must be able to make quick decisions under moments of extreme pressure. The outcome of the patients is directly related to their ability to think and act appropriately during these emergency situations. The nature of the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) profession is that it is an uncontrolled and sometimes dangerous environment. One must be able to recognize and deal with potentially volatile people and dangerous situations with the goal of providing quality pre-hospital care.
Students will learn to perform advanced airway procedures, administer medications and intravenous solutions, interpret cardiac rhythms, and use a defibrillator as well as perform minor surgical interventions. Skills will be first learned in a laboratory or classroom setting, and when proficient, skills will be utilized in a clinical setting with supervision. Ultimately, skills will be utilized in a field setting under the supervision of a Paramedic preceptor. Only after completing these steps will the student be placed in a position that will test their ability to make decisions and perform skills in the field with an evaluator present.
As a paramedic program graduate, you can take the National Registry written and practical exams. These tests are required for Paramedic Licensure.
You may also earn an associate degree in applied science from the University of Saint Francis if you attend two semesters at the University. The degree program includes credit hours that can also be used for the nursing program.
Requirements
- Applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
- Submission of completed Paramedic Course Application.
- A photocopy of birth certificate and driver’s license / State ID.
- Valid and Current Indiana (IDHS) EMT certification (Nationally registered EMTs may receive provisional candidate status until they are certified in Indiana).
- Valid American Heart Association BLS CPR certification (copy required).
- Three letters of recommendations – EMS / medical field references only (No friends and/or family recommendation letters).
- Letter of Intent outlining why applicant wants to be a Paramedic in the Franciscan Alliance – Crown Point EMS ProgramCompleted physical examination performed by a doctor licensed in Indiana (MD, DO, NP, PA accepted) indicating you are physically fit for the course and clinical internship.
- Submission of negative PPD (Tuberculous) skin test.
- Submission of childhood vaccine records (Rubella, Rubeola, Mumps, Hepatitis B, Varicella).
- Submission of Flu Shot Results.
- Submission of COVID Vaccine or Waiver (Not Required).
- Completed criminal background check with no felony convictions.
- Submission of negative 10-panel urine drug screen with no drug and/or alcohol dependency.
Contact the EMS Office at 219-757-6334 for a referral order for a Non-DOT physical exam, PPD/TB test, and/or a urine drug screen at a Franciscan Alliance Working Well location.
Applicants must also:
- Show EMT-level knowledge and skill proficiency.
- Complete a written pre-test examination (minimum score of 70 percent) and the EMT-Basic skills evaluation, according to the state guidelines.
- Show the ability to give and receive written and verbal instruction and feedback.
- Meet paramedic job analysis criteria.
- Take a standardized personality profile examination.
- Take part in a personal interview with the selection committee / Paramedic Candidate Review Board.
- One-half of course fee must be paid as a deposit two weeks prior to the beginning of the course.
Accreditation
Franciscan Health Crown Point's Paramedic Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).
Our program's goal is to prepare competent entry-level paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit points at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and/or Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Responder Levels.
