Overview
The one (1) year full-time fellowship adheres to a practitioner-scholar model with the primary focus on the goal of changing the face of healthcare to induce behavioral health as an indispensable component of primary healthcare and the patient-centered medical home.
This training program offers fellows an opportunity to become comfortable and competent working in the interdisciplinary context of primary care, providing consultation to medical providers and providing psychology and behavioral health treatments with primary care patients. The fellow will function as a member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team in a family medicine residency clinic. This training structure allows the fellow to grow his or her clinical skills with a highly varied population in integrated primary care.
The program is designed to prepare clinical and counseling psychologists to achieve the following goals:
- Develop leadership and advocacy skills for the implementation of integrated collaborative healthcare.
- Practice evidence-based psychotherapy in a primary care setting while targeting chronic disease processes.
- Enhance capabilities of advanced practice competency in independent practice as a clinical health psychologist with sufficient preparation to be credentialed and ultimately board certified by ABPP in clinical health psychology.
Curriculum
Daily routines vary, but may include diagnostic screenings, behavioral health consultations, and brief psychological interventions with children, adults and families. Additionally, the fellowship provides didactic training, one-on-one supervision, and opportunities for other rotations based on each individual's interests. Responsibilities will allow for fulfillment of the licensure requirement in the State of Indiana (12 months/2,000 hours).
TRAINING
Philosophy
The training philosophy and model is based on a supervised experiential approach in which post doctorate fellows are trained in evidence based clinical health psychology through intensive didactic, clinical observations, clinical supervision, and training alongside family medicine residents. Fellows learn how to teach and train family medicine residents to recognize behavioral health needs and use psychosocial knowledge and behavioral health skills to improve healthcare. Fellows also learn skills to build an integrated service program in a primary care setting.
STRUCTURE
Clinical
Clinical experiences typically include 18 - 20 (scheduled) direct client hours per week. These contact hours may include a mixture of individual, group, family, and/or couples psychotherapy, assessment, and consultation. Additionally, fellows will provide supervisory opportunities to pre-doctorate psychology students.
Research
Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in and develop quality improvement measures and/or standard academic peer reviewed literature based research. Research includes an option of presenting at a national conference.
Education
Provide education to resident physicians to enhance professional, communication, and behavioral health skills and techniques as they apply to quality patient care. Some activities include formal presentations, reviewing recordings of real time and simulated patient-physician encounters, and providing feedback to physicians for enhancing individual growth.
Program Development
Develop programing related to improving well-being of patients and healthcare providers. This includes planning, monitoring, and receiving feedback for quality assurance and research purposes.
Administrative
Learn and implement protocols and policies related to integrated care strategies from a behavioral health perspective including chronic illnesses/disorders such as ADHD, suicidality, warm hand offs, chronic pain management and risk assessments.
Requirements
Completion of and degree conferred from an APA accredited doctoral program in Clinical or Counseling Psychology (PhD/PsyD) as well as an APA accredited internship. Candidates should be committed to serving an underserved population constituent with the mission of Franciscan Health.
Doctorate degree must be confirmed by training institution prior to the August start date.

Marlyssa Rae Fillmore, PhD, HSPP
Behavioral Health Faculty/Psychologist
Dr. Fillmore received both her master’s and doctoral degrees from Ball State University. She is most interested in providing assessment services to children, teens, and young adults, and she is passionate about patient advocacy. Dr. Fillmore chose Franciscan because of the family-friendly environment and the opportunity to continue to learn from other professionals.
