Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Training

Overview

This is a five-day comprehensive introductory course that is designed to provide the healthcare professional with the skills to complete a full medical/legal forensic evaluation. Nurse participants must attend all five days to receive a certificate of completion.

Objectives:

  • Define the community response and roles of each discipline
  • Discuss the roles and responsibilities of the health care professional
  • Explain body's response to trauma: Neurobiological response to trauma
  • Comprehend the steps of the medical/forensic evaluation of the male/female/ adult/adolescent patient
  • Recognize the importance of forensic documentation
  • Identify the importance of accurate forensic evidence recognition, collection and preservation
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill for effective courtroom testimony
  • This continuing nursing education activity is approved for nursing contact hours through the Ohio Nurses Association. The Indiana State Nurses Association is designated ONA as the official approver of the CNE Providers and activities for Indiana.

Requirements

This course is designed for the healthcare professionals providing medical/forensic examinations for the adult/adolescent sexual assault patient. It is also open to any member of the community SART/resource team: advocates, investigators, law enforcement, anyone involved in the judicial process:
